I hate to hit you all with this on a Monday morning, but Wisconsin’s horseowners really do need to be aware of this guy, if they aren’t already. So bear with me and go get your coffee first before you have to read this one.
Sterling Rachwal is yet another of those warped individuals who likes to have sex with animals. Sterling, however, takes it a little further than most – he’s a sexual sadist and he likes to kill them, too, often in perverted ways. Click on the below links at your own risk – what has been seen cannot be unseen, as they say, and while there are no pictures, the descriptions are graphic enough to give a lot of people nightmares.
This guy has been doing this stuff his entire life. He isn’t going to change and he can’t be rehabilitated. Get this, some completely judgmentarded woman named Chris Ranta isdating him. I really don’t have words for that…it’s more kinds of ewww than I even want to think about.
Anyway, he’s current back in a mental instituation but he can appeal that every six months so if you have horses in Wisconsin, you might want to stay on top of that. Someone was helpful enough to post on CL that he drives a blue 1993 Ford F150 and his license plate is GZ6576. I mean, obviously he might trade that in but I’m still happy to put that ID’ing tip out there!
Oh, here’s his Facebook page. Apparently he started out with 37 friends…it’s down to 8 people with incredibly poor judgment now.
And ladies? For god’s sake, stop friending everyone who sends you a request on Facebook. And be aware of who your kids are friending! Friend your FRIENDS, for God’s sake, and make your profiles private to everybody else. This will not only help keep you away from horse molesters, it will also keep you away from child molesters, serial killers, etc. This has been today’s public service announcement…
If you like a smaller horse and want to lead the way on the trail, consider Harmony, a Quarab mare who is up for adoption at Shiloh Horse Rescue in Nevada. What a cutie! She was narrowly rescued from being a sandwich and is sound, rehabbed and ready to go.
As the old saying goes, a leopard does not change its spots. We see this all the time in the horse world. People who neglect horses don’t typically reform their evil ways. They just swerve punishment for them however they can, usually by moving to a new place, or just laying low for a while, and then they return to doing the same old crap that got them featured on the Fugly blog and/or prosecuted the first time.
You have probably already guessed that this post contains an update on Dean Solomon. Yes, Dean simply cannot stay out of trouble with Animal Control. New cruelty charges were filed against her and accomplice Nancy Pacey in January. I wonder if they’ve caught Nancy yet — she failed to appear and they had to put a warrant out for her! You can download the details here. I know some of you locals think A.C. has been asleep at the switch when it comes to Dean, but really, they’ve been watching her this whole time and her refusal to obey the order that does not allow her to own horses has been duly noted. Pats on the back to KCAC!
Now, remember the moron who was trying to argue she had a tobiano purebred Arabian? She didn’t, BTW. She has often come up in the comments as a classic example of virtually everything we hate about BYB’ers — the horses are low quality, it’s all about color, not a one of them has accomplished anything more complicated than pooping and walking at the same time, and now for the final but not surprising nail in the coffin, I have proof they’re living in crappy conditions and she won’t pay her bills. Yes, Shatormar Arabians‘ Tory Morgan has shown herself to be the epitome of a piece of shit backyard breeder — not only is she not paying board to the 80+ year old man currently housing her 30+ neglected horses on his property, but the bee-yotch owes him for three grand of hay as well! Poor old guy does not know how to get rid of her and everybody feels sorry for the horses.
Tory’s got 34 head of horses out there, plus a dozen or so foals on the ground, and every mare is bred back. There are studs just running loose with the mares, eight foals in a 40×40 paddock and eight 2/3-year-olds in a 20×30, and the six or so yearlings in a part of the dairy barn that is about 8×30 .Of course, Tory, like all pieces of shit like her, knew exactly where to locate her Pinto Puppymill — in a county that doesn’t have an Animal Control. And – are you ready for it? – Guess how Miss Tory supports herself? Wait for it – YES, she is on DISABILITY! Your tax dollars at work, funding her pinto puppymill! I don’t know WTF is supposed to be wrong with her, since I’m fairly sure Irresponsible and Lazy aren’t disabilities (yet) but what a crock of crap.
From the person who reported her: ”The turd of a woman has No Trespassing, No Pictures, No Video posted EVERYWHERE. NO WATER ANYWHERE!!!!” Yeah. How’d that no pictures and no video thing work for you, Tory? NO ONE CARES WHAT YOU SAY. Since I know legal threats are forthcoming, may I suggest you pay up your board and hay bill before attempting to retain an attorney? They aren’t as easy to avoid paying as the senior citizen that you are victimizing.
I just can’t get over the classy facilities. It’s like an obstacle course for those poor horses – a dairy barn full of old equipment, ladders on the ground, barbed wire, etc. And her web site says they hope to be moving to a new farm in 2010. I hope they think about paying the poor old man they’ve been scamming, but I won’t hold my breath! By the way, Tory, love the browband in your stallion’s eyes. It’s amazing how you’re healthy enough to ride, reproduce and breed horses yet somehow unable to work. What, do you have an allergy to gainful employment?
Yes, this is being reported and yes, I will let you know what happens!
All right, moving on…while we’re talking about wastes of oxygen, you may remember one of the worst scammers to ever suck money out of the ABR board, Catherine Petersen. My original blog on here is here: http://www.fuglyblog.com/2008/im-afraid-to-call-myself-a-rescuer-anymore/. I just got an update that she goes to trial in June. She is still in jail in Kentucky so the horse world is safe (for now). Sounds like she may plead her way down to 3-5 years of prison but the good news is that there are warrants out for her in four other states, so her legal troubles are far from over.
From the story, “Officers seized 19 Sullivan horses back in 1996, leading to her first conviction of animal cruelty. Another of her horses was found dead in April 2008. That summer she was again convicted, An Augusta County judge barred Terry Lynn Sullivan from owning horses for two years. Her attorney appealed that ruling, and now awaits a decision from a higher court.” OK, folks, HERE IS HER PICTURE. STOP GIVING HER HORSES!!! She is getting them from somewhere. STOP! Terry uses the business name Shaner Lane Farm. She also had (OF COURSE!) a “rescue” called the Fern Leigh Equine Foundation. I’ve said it before but I need to say it again: a 501(c)3 is not any kind of proof that you are a decent animal caretaker. None at all. It only means you are good at paperwork or hired someone who is. Read this description of Sullivan letting a mare lay in her field and die and then claim it would not get up because it was “stubborn.” That poor Brigette Berbes woman has been knocking herself out for years trying to put this bitch in a cell. I’ll bet somewhere on the Internet, some asshat is talking about how Brigette is a meanie and is harassing poor old Terry. Brigette, the Fugly blog would like to give you a medal! Thank you for your persistence, heaven knows these horses would be dead without it.
Oh, and approximately three people a week e-mail me in horror about the Bedonna chick. I know, I know. She has twelve stallions at stud. Some are nice – I sure wouldn’t kick Our Cash Policy out of the barn – but some are not – Go To Moons has got to have one of the ugliest necks I have ever seen on a QH stallion. She’s expecting approximately one kajillion 2010 foals.
She isn’t going to stop breeding. She’s been doing this forever. She was on the blog in October 2007 – she was the dimwit who had to immediately sell 130 horses due to being pregnant. WTF? She’s like that person who keeps driving drunk, again and again — she just doesn’t care how her actions affect others. The only big picture she understands is the velvet Elvis hanging over the couch. The concept of responsible breeding and reducing the supply so that the demand will perk up is as baffling as quantum physics to her. She doesn’t get it and never will. She only cares that you pay her, or she’ll out you for that on her web site. Well, Bedonna, I’m outing you for breeding way too damn many mostly unspectacular Quarter Horses on my web site…yet again.
Now, as to the Alexis Ingraham story (certainly a case of things that don’t change since the stories go back ten years with her!) – NickerNews is updating and covering it comprehensively, so head on over there to see what is going on and get a lot more information. They are doing a great job with their coverage of this. I doubt the authorities are going to be able to let this one slide! Also check out their other thread about the Searsport horses and particularly the comment of Kathy Carpenter, who explains EXACTLY how to get the attention of your legislators (and she is dead on-target with her advice). You also must read the complaint submitted to animal control on Alexis’ farm – extremely well written and horrifying account. The story about the foal that was down is truly disturbing…it even was for me and I’m pretty jaded by now. Alexis MUST be stopped and MUST be banned from owning horses. If you’re in Maine, please do not give up until this happens. She’s your Dean Solomon, and she won’t stop until law enforcement makes her stop.
Well, she finally got busted this year – I just got an update now. Unfortunately, 11 horses are dead that were most likely alive when I wrote my story.
Here is a great thread about the rehab of one of Glenda’s mares who was returned to a previous owner. Kudos to her for stepping up to help her old horse. It is not going to be a cheap process.
And as someone on that thread says, “someone who keeps stallions and breeds the mares every year, finance or no finance, is a hoarder.” ABSOLUTELY! When you KNOW that you do not have money and you STILL breed, you have a very serious problem. I have heard all kinds of nonsense from people about how they are going to have money by the time the foals are born, sheesh, give me a break. If you do not have money now, you will not have it by the time the foals are born. The money fairy isn’t going to stop by and shower you with gold. Grow up.
Speak up for Horses’ blog entry about the case. From the blog:
“Update October 2009:
Glenda Wright was given several more opportunities to re-home her horses, but still hasn’t done so. October 13th, at another court hearing, she filed a complaint against the lawyer who represented her earlier. The court appointed a new lawyer and has given her yet another continuance until October 27th.
In the meantime several foals were either stillborn or died shortly after birth and the stallions continue to run at large with the remaining horses.”
OF COURSE they do.
When does it end? And on the West coast, Dean Solomon was seen at the Enumclaw auction. She’s found another sucker to buy horses for her. Does this person never watch the $!&$! news?
“this guy is 2 years old warm blood this boy is the sweetest baby youl find he always follows u like a puppy dog he always lets you halter him and do what ever with him he has had bridle on and saddle pads and no problem he lets you lean across him with your arm over him he is just a real sweet boy with be a awsome horse no matter what u do with him he has that great personality im asking 1000 for him but will consider offers on him he needs to find a good home and the ability to train him and take him any direction you want i hate having to sell him but i have to please call me at XXX-XXX-XXXX please feel free to give me offers these first two pics are old pics from july he is much bigger now hes 15.3 hands and way pretier last pic is now
ps here is the reason i really need to find this horse a home i am fighting cps for my kids that they illegally took from me and i have to get a lawyer so i need to sell my horses i need to fight and not let that organized crime ring take my children”
OK, now that I’ve made you all snork coffee all over your desks, isn’t it just amazing how most of us are never in any danger of having animal control take our animals or CPS take our children? What I think is funny about this argument is that it’s NOT like animal control wants more animals or CPS wants more children! In both cases, foster homes are far too scarce as are monetary resources to care for them. Lady, EVERYBODY at CPS, hell, everybody in the WORLD wishes YOU could take care of your children adequately so that others would not have to intervene. There are a million resources out there to get free or low cost help for whatever issues you may have, and improve your situation and parenting skills. If CPS had to go so far as to take your children out of your care, you are not being persecuted — odds are you have major, major problems that you are unwilling to address.
Stuff like this just cracks me up. Organized crime ring. Yeah. Right. And you’d better wear a tin foil hat, too, or the government will read your thoughts and mind control you…
Why do these people ALWAYS have kids and ALWAYS own innocent animals? Why can’t they just stick to hurting themselves?
Side note: The horse actually looks pretty cute…I’m sure he’d appreciate an upgrade if you’re interested!
I know everybody’s dying to talk about this one, so here you go.
In case you haven’t already heard, the Asshat Queen of 2009, Kathleen Costello, got a Thoroughbred mare named Grand Forks from a farm she had worked at and gotten canned from. The mare’s previous owner, a gentleman named Rick Trontz, wanted to find a good home for her after her breeding career was over. In fact, he wanted to make sure no one would try to breed her since he did not want anything bad to happen to her. He was the epitome of a responsible horse breeder. So he gave the horse to Kathleen, who promised a future of dressage competitions for this still-sound stakes winning mare. Kathleen had been working for him, so hey, he figured he knew her well and could trust her. Pretty good reasoning. Except for failing to obtain a contract, Mr. Trontz really didn’t put a foot wrong as far as being a responsible owner rehoming a horse.
But then Ms. Costello, who is probably as qualified to retrain a horse for dressage as I am to translate Farsi at a U.N. conference, did something positively insane. She put the horse back into race training. One poster on the Thorougbred Champions forum said it best, so I will simply requote Intelligent Male: “This is some silly person who wants to play horse trainer (they’ve never had a starter) and since no one would dare give them a horse to train they took a free giveaway failed broodmare (slipped ‘02, no report ‘03 and ‘04, dead foal ‘05, ‘06, and ‘07, no report ‘08 and ‘09) and are going to run her so they can say they’re a trainer.”
Bing! Bing! Bing! We have a winner. Sir, that is exactly on target. This is 100% about idiotic ego and not a bit about common sense, winning a race and heaven knows it’s not about the welfare of the horse. As a friend of mine observed “she could go get a free young, fit racehorse at any track around! They’re FREE!” Indeed, they are. We do not need to go out and run Grandma. No, twelve’s not old, but on the track, it’s ancient and far past the point at which a horse needs to be well into their second or third career somewhere else.
Ms. Costello is not the only moron in the world, to be sure. Just two years ago, Ellis Park track President Ron Geary purchased a 17 year old gelding in disgust to keep him from being entered in any more races. Story here. What’s that saying, common sense isn’t so common?
So, anyway, as soon as the story gets some attention, Ms. Costello gets her 15 minutes of fame and uses it to provide this blog with material. “I’m definitely hoping to have more horses, but I’m a little strapped for cash right now,” Costello said. “I intend to bet on her, and she’ll be a big price, so maybe I can grow my stable that way.” Damn. I have found the perfect author for Ill Advised Horse Ventures for Dummies. Alert the publishers. Yes, Kathleen, you should totally put a 12 year old mare in a race when you’re strapped for cash. I’m sure the vets won’t charge you a thing when she breaks down on the track. They will just go, oh, heck, poor Kathleen is trying to grow her stable! Let’s give her a freebie this time!
Anyway, the public outcry was significant and the end result was that Churchill Downs decided at the eleventh hour that the mare was not allowed to run. I’m sure they realized that if she broke down or had a heart attack, it would be more bad publicity for an already-damaged racing industry, and it’s not like PETA was screaming, it was all the other reputable trainers and jockeys that were screaming, citing facts such as the breakdown in bone density of a horse that has not been kept fit for the past nine years. But hey, that isn’t going to deter Costello – she’s bound and determined to race this mare and has announced she’ll stay in training. Gee, I thought you were strapped for cash? Let’s all pray to the Gods of Financial Ruin that Costello runs out of money before this mare ever has to break from a gate again!
Costello showed her maturity and sanity by crying and throwing a hissy fit in the paddock, by the way. No, really? And she wasn’t alone. “John Odom, who was assisting Costello in the care of the horse Wednesday, said: “The bill of sale only says the mare cannot be bred. It doesn’t say anything about not racing her. Nothing was ever said about that.” When he learned the mare would not be permitted to run, Odom screamed at Veitch: “Why is she scratched?!”" Oh for fuck’s sake. Of course Trotz didn’t want her to be raced. She was a 12 year old ex-broodmare that he gave away for free to an alleged good home. Shut up, you two, you sound like even bigger idiots when you open your mouths. I will say that I did learn from other people in TB rescue that you ALWAYS put a “cannot be raced” clause in your adoption contracts, because people are wackjobs and sometimes you can’t tell.
Anyway, in case this story wasn’t wacky enough, someone started posting on the TC forum claiming to be Kathleen’s friend who was with her in the paddock. Showing all the maturity and good judgment of a troubled 12 year old who needs to go to boot camp ASAP, this person posted:
“Trontz, owner of Hopewell farm is the one who put the huge fuss about all this. The horse was sold to Kathleen with the stipulation that it would NOT be bred. I have the bill of sale right here. Trontz called us yesterday and threatened us with PETA and said we were abusing the horse. I called him and we spoke for about 5 minutes and he assured me forky would not run today. Richard Trontz spent the whole day at the race office trying to get forky scratched. They threatened us at one point until the state vet came out a 2nd time and agreed she was fit and sound to race. He told us “good luck guys”.
Everything was fine until Kathleen and myself made it to the paddock with that bald loser named John V came up and scratched her stating it was his choice and that we needed to have a state vet come out and what forky work. We are currently trying to set that up. Kathleen is really angry tonight about what has happened and is determined to get her on the track.”
Well, if that’s true, it just makes ME want to give Rick Trontz a medal for responsible ownership! How about you? I HOPE he tails this piece of shit woman and keeps her from racing that mare. Good work, Mr. Trontz! By the way, I am sure your comments will make the bald loser EVER so eager to clear your mare for racing. Way to win friends and influence people!
But never fear, the anonymous comments continue to be paired with more print media attention whoring from Ms. Costello, who seems intent on establishing herself as the Jon Gosselin of horse racing. “She had so much spunk and, every time I rode her, she got higher and higher,” said the 27-year-old Costello, who has not previously started a horse in a race. “She has been really happy, and she loves to run. Honestly, I did it for her.”
OOOOOKAY CRAZY STAGE MOM! Here’s a hint: Maybe you should actually accomplish something YOURSELF in life other than being a fired farm employee so that you do not have to live vicariously through an animal. Oh wait, I forgot, you have a degree in equine management. ROTFL. Yet another moron with an equine management degree and no actual equine management ability or good judgment.
I was dying to find a pic of this ding-dong. Anybody who was actually at CD, is this her myspace? It’s her name and age in Lexington…love to have a pic of the mare, too, did anyone snap one?)
Costello clearly doesn’t have a clue how racing even works! She made a comment that the mare was her pet and would stay with her forever. Again, as TC poster FlowerEssence observed, did she not realize it was a CLAIMING RACE? I’m sorry, this woman is WAY too ignorant to be involved in the racing industry, but I also agree with those who don’t want to see a $5,000 ransom paid for a barren 12 year old mare just to keep her from dying in an ugly accident. It isn’t the solution to put $5,000 in this twit’s pocket. We can only hope that the stewards will continue to have as much sense as the one at CD did.
On a happy note, if you’re holiday shopping for your horsey friends and want to help ex-racehorses, click below for a very fun gift idea!
Another day, another selfish, egotistical idiot who would rather let her horses starve to death than admit that she’s broke and can’t take care of them. Today our offender is Judy Caton. Judy has some extremely nice Quarter Horses including a very nice reining horse named Meerly Inwhizable. Judy’s web site has gone poof (no, really?) but thanks to the magic of the Google Cache, you can see his page here.
Meerly Inwhizable used to be a fine looking horse, as can be seen if you click here. Now, uh, well, you can see his current condition at left. This is RIDICULOUS. Just about ANY reining horse breeder would be HAPPY to care lease this stallion (I’m noting that now I’ve been told he’s a gelding and her site does show him to be a gelding. OK so we’ll edit to “any reining horse competitor” as that is true also – this horse has won a lot and anyone would enjoy having him to show and, you know, FEED him). He is starving for one reason: Because Judy Caton is a stubborn, egotistical idiot who doesn’t want everybody to know she can’t afford to feed her horses. Well, Judy, now the world knows! Now, will you give up your poor horse to somebody who has hay money?
It’s one thing when you have horses that no one wants…the kind of horses that even the kill buyer turns up his nose at. It can be a little more challenging to get those moved along, even when offering them for free. But it’s not even MILDLY challenging to place a horse with this horse’s accomplishments. Unless this woman is completely, off-every-possible-rocker mentally ill, there is no explanation for this. And given that she has been showing and running the frickin’ Washington Reining Horse Association, I would imagine she’s relatively lucid. Bet she’s plenty lucid enough to write me legal threats after I publish this blog.
Sadly, this stallion isn’t the only one suffering. All of these pictures were taken recently on her farm. (Clue #1: Everybody has a camera phone. They don’t flash and you can turn the clickety noise off.)
Now, here’s the interesting thing about this situation. Snohomish Animal Control, which had NO problem prosecuting people like Jean Elledge, seems to be protecting equally neglectful Judy Caton. They have discouraged media attention in this case, and at last report have decided to allow her to keep TWENTY FOUR horses. Are they smoking CRACK? Who is she buddies with at Sno-Co? She should not be allowed to keep a single horse. Visitors to the property found the horses not just without food but without WATER. Um, the only reason your horses don’t have water is that you are a lazy-ass bitch who won’t get off the couch to water them. It’s not like you have to go to the feed store and have a working credit card to water them.
Judy, the world already knows you’re broke. Anybody who can use the Washington Court Search can see how often you’ve been sued or had judgments against you that have gone unpaid. This is not a secret. Your starving horses are not a secret. You cannot cover this up. Surrender those horses now while they are still breathing to good homes, and then do something sensible to rebuild your finances – like lease out your very nice property to someone who can feed their horses. The worst part is heading into winter knowing how many of you are out there…how many herds of broodmares are sitting on pastures that can’t be seen from the road, getting thinner and thinner, pregnant bellies sticking out underneath hipbones that grow more prominent by the day. We’re going to see a lot of these wrecks this winter, though not often with quality horses like these. I just cannot fathom what kind of selfishness makes you hang on to horses YOU can’t feed that LOTS of other people would want. Do you really think you’re going to get money for them? Not looking like that, you’re not. Face reality, swallow your pride and give your horses a chance to survive. That poor stallion is only nine years old!
Oh, for anybody who wants to ask Snohomish County Animal Control why they are allowing her to keep two dozen horses and if there are charges pending, their # is (425) 388-3440. I’m very curious to hear what you are told (and if different officers come out with different answers, so find out who you’re speaking to!) I don’t see any reason there shouldn’t be criminal charges, looking at those pictures, do you?
